CHILDREN

Art Experiences I (ages 6-8) with Nina Nemeth

Dates: 5 Sundays: January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5

Time: 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm

Fee: Museum member: $115; Non-member: $125

Materials: There will be a one-time supply fee of $5 payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Children will have an opportunity to explore and experiment with a variety of visual art techniques and mediums through simple projects and hands-on activities. Various art materials and techniques will involve pastel, watercolor painting, drawing, and collage.

 

Art Experiences II (ages 9-12) with Nina Nemeth

Dates: 5 Sundays: January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5

Time: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Museum member: $115; Non-member: $125

Materials: There will be a one-time supply fee of $5 payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Developed for a slightly older group – children will have an opportunity to continue exploring and experimenting with a variety of visual art techniques and mediums through simple projects and hands-on activities. Various materials and techniques will involve painting and collage, experimenting with mediums such as pastel, watercolors, and drawing.

Starry.  Acrylic paint worked with various conventional and unconventional tools.

Masterpiece Studio (ages 6-10) with Nina Nemeth

Dates: 5 Thursdays: January 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16

Time: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Materials: There will be a one-time supply fee of $5 payable to the instructor on the first day of class.

Introduce Art History to children through a hands-on integrated artist study. Students will be exposed to a variety of art techniques and styles while learning about famous artists such as Picasso, Degas, Monet, Kandinsky, O’Keeffe, and others.

Little Sculptures for Little Hands

 

Under the Sea Workshop (ages 6-10) with Don Thieberger

Date: Saturday, January 21

Time: 9:30 am – 11:00 am

Attention young sculptors! Mr. Nose of Platypus Pottery School will feature his animal sculpting techniques that have delighted hundreds of children! Themes can range from sea creatures at a party, dogs driving sports cars, penguins surfing, or a bear watching TV while eating honey. Each student receives a chunk of white clay and concentrated colored clay. They will tweak, twist, and blend them into fantastic creations. Bake your child’s project at home for lasting results.

 

Fishes & Faces Sand Casting Workshop (ages 6-10) with Don Thieberger

Date: Saturday, February 4

Attention young sculptors! Learn sand art sculpture casting (sand casting) with Mr. Nose of Platypus Pottery School!  We will sculpt sand as a negative form and cast plaster into a bas-relief sculpture. The results are quick! Students take a painted, finished work of art home at the end of the workshop!

Lighting and Composition for Digital Photography Workshop with Nancy Ori

Date: Sunday, February 5

Time: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Prerequisite: Students should already have an awareness of the camera basics.
Materials: Bring your favorite camera, accessories, the camera instruction manual and a notebook. 

This workshop will combine lecture and hands-on opportunities with a goal of balancing the technical with the creative.  Topics will include the use of natural and indoor lighting, how to control the light, getting good exposures, and tips on good composition. Discussions will feature the art of seeing photographically and heightening your awareness of light within your photographs. While working with a variety of favorite subject matter, students will be introduced to the design elements in order to create effective compositions.

Learn to draw the figure from life – beginning with quick, gesture sketches from short poses, and concluding with completed drawings from long poses. You will learn proportions and how to achieve the correct relationship between the parts of the body, using guides like plumb-lines and negative spaces. Experience the chance to draw many types of figures in a nurturing, non-competitive atmosphere.

“I got a new digital camera…NOW WHAT?!” Workshop with Nancy Ori

Date: Sunday, January 8

Time: 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Materials: Bring your favorite camera, the camera instruction manual and notebook. 

Learn how to work your new digital camera properly and have fun making great images of family, friends, and vacations.  Topics include the creative choices facilitated by proper use of shutter speed and aperture controls, resolution and quality options, use of available light, in-camera light meter, white balance, composition tips, camera accessories and flash, as well as demonstrations and hands-on practice to understand how the camera works and thinks. The workshop is designed to introduce beginners to the creative possibilities while demystifying the language of the technical features. How to use your camera’s instruction manual more effectively, accompanied by a handout, will help you navigate the reference material after the workshop.  

Acrylic Painting: Landscape & Still Life with Edward Sprafkin

Dates: 6 Wednesdays: January 11, 18, 25, February 1, 8, 15

Create paintings from your favorite photos or work from a still-life that will be set up for reference. Learn about composition, color mixing, value and form. Acrylic painting techniques and mediums will be explored. Demonstrations provided. Beginners to experienced painters welcome.

Learn how to create a likeness through direct observation of a live model. Structure of human head, proportion, facial features and rendering form will be covered. Various types of dry media will also be explored. Demonstrations provided. Beginners encouraged. All levels welcome.

Fibers & Craft

Tunisian Crochet 2-week Class with Carolyn Hanson

Dates: 2 Saturdays: January 21 & 28

Time: 9 am – 12 noon

Materials: All supplies can be purchased on or before the first class for approximately $30. Supply list provided upon registration.

Learn an old technique of crochet that is very popular today. Crocheting with a long hook works up very fast, creating a fabric that looks woven but uses less yarn than traditional crochet. Tunisian crochet is versatile, giving you the freedom to create a wide variety of projects. This two-week class gets you started with an accent scarf. The class is suitable for new and experienced crochet students. Knitters welcome!

 

Fashion Under Foot Workshop with Freddie Johnson

Materials: There will be supply fee of $10 payable to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop.

Celebrate the works on view in the exhibition Modern Tapestries and Floor Coverings Conceived by Picasso, Calder & their Contemporaries (January 19 – April 15, 2012). Join fashion designer Freddie Johnson to create your own decorative floor covering. Add texture and dimension by weaving fiber into your floor covering.

 

Treasure Book Workshop with Alice Harrison

Date: Saturday: January 28

Time: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Museum member: $90; Non-member: $100

Materials: Supply list provided upon registration.

Create a simple accordion book structure and make an artist book with collage pages to be viewed page by page or open to view as a panorama OR bring a book to alter. Have fun learning book making and collage techniques. Personalize with your trips, memories and/or special occasions. The process is easy and the result rewarding.  The instructor will supply boards for book cover and the paper needed. If you specifically want your own cover material and paper for pages, do bring them. She will also have some collage materials available for your use.

Our Talented Instructors


Carolyn Hanson is a fiber artist specializing in hand knits. Based in Warren, NJ, she designs, writes patterns, and knits unique custom-made accessories such as scarves, shawls, handbags and wearable art in fabulous colors and textures. Carolyn has been an enthusiastic knitter and crocheter since childhood and shares her talent with students at local yarn shops, and adult schools where she teaches classes from beginner to advanced, design to restoration. Carolyn is a freelance writer for the Warren-Watchung Connection since 2005. See her work and patterns at www.ravelry.com/passionknitpm.


Laurie Harden is an illustrator and painter, and has been, it seems, all her life. It is her first love and abiding passion. She works in oils, gouache, pastels, charcoal and pencil. Laurie studied at Kansas City Art Institute and Rhode Island School of Design where she graduated with a BFA in Illustration. She resides in Northern New Jersey. Her work is widely exhibited, awarded, commissioned and collected. An artist with an international clientele, she also teaches art privately and at several art associations. Illustration clients include Harper & Collins, McGraw Hill, Houghton Mifflin, to name just a few.


Alice Harrison's work has been exhibited widely in galleries and universities throughout the United States and also has been shown in Europe and New Zealand. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards. The artist's paintings are found in many private collections as well as public and corporate collections. She has also received several Geraldine R. Dodge grants, and is included in 2000 Outstanding Artists and Designers of the 20th Century, published in England

Nina Nemeth received her B.F.A. from Southampton College, L.I.U. and her M.F.A. from Pratt Institute, NYC. She has worked as an atelier assistant to Yoshi Higa (Weston press). She has also worked as studio assistants/intern to Thomas Allen (illustrator, Sag Harbor, NY) and Michael Knigin (Fine Artist, Circle Gallery, NYC). Nina enjoys working in as many different mediums as possible. More recently she has been exploring collage, painting, drawing, and mixed media. For the past ten years, Nina has been a digital technology/computer media teacher as well as an art instructor in various schools and studios. Sharing her passion with her students is something she thoroughly enjoys.


Nancy J. Ori has been respected for over three decades as a corporate photographer and video producer for New Jersey Media Center LLC in Berkeley Heights, NJ. She also enjoys teaching at photography classes and workshops in the US and Europe as well as tutoring privately throughout the year. She was affiliated for many years with the Ansel Adams Workshop in CA and is presently on the faculty and regular lecturer at numerous art centers and museums in NJ. She holds a BA degree in Fine Arts and an MS degree in Visual Communications from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.


Edward Sprafkin has been drawing and painting since childhood and has always been drawn to the little things that many of us simply overlook – the way the light falls upon an everyday object or the many moods of the great outdoors. “Every day, nature orchestrates a magnificent performance. My aim is to capture these moments.” When painting en plein air he strives to capture the light and essence of the scene. He instinctively sees art and beauty everywhere from spectacular views to the simplest corners of a setting.
The artist is an instructor at the Morris County Art Association, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, The Center for Contemporary Art, a member of the Art Center of New Jersey, New Jersey Society of En Plein Air Artists, the Oil Painters of America and the Portrait Society of America. He continues to join exhibitions at local art galleries and remains active in plein air events in and around NJ.


Don Thieberger is a Master Potter and owner of Platypus Pottery School in Livingston, NJ. He enjoys teaching children how to sculpt in clay while talking about the animals they are creating. He teaches in many after school programs in the Livingston area. Mr. Thieberger also teaches wheel-thrown pottery at Montclair Museum’s Yard School to both adults and children.
