Thirteen years in the making, Wendel White's Small Towns,
Black Lives: African American Communities in Southern New
Jersey opens the viewer to overlooked pages of social
history in rural southern New Jersey. This multimedia exhibition,
on display from September 16 through November 23, 2003,
documents six African American communities, capturing glimpses
into lives, homes and people through eloquent black and
white images.

The sentiment of home and the historic sense of place infuse
this important collection with a voice that reaches beyond
immediate topical boundaries to describe a larger history
of our society. White writes, "The photographs… are
made in communities that have no direct connection to my
personal history, but they are representations of a connection
and context."
