Here come the brides! The Morris Museum is pleased to present Invitations to a Wedding: Bridal Gowns from the 1820s to the Present. Featuring an exquisite selection of more than 40 historic bridal gowns accompanied by jewelry and accessories from the museum’s extensive collection of costumes and textiles, the exhibition examines many of the details that have made the wedding gown and its wearer special over time.
As the role of women and wives has changed through the centuries, the marriage rites themselves have also been redefined. Through the richness or simplicity of fabric, the use of lace or trains, the prominence of bustles, or changing hem lines that go up and down as women gain emancipation or surrender it, the gowns in the exhibition dramatize the social and cultural changes that have accompanied the sweep of American history.
Visitors of all ages will experience the exhibit in their own unique ways—some with nostalgia, others with wonder, curiosity and perhaps an eye towards choosing their own wedding gown!

Also on view will be an extensive display of wedding photos, invitations, marriage licenses and other items dating back to the 17th century, including a marriage license issued by King George III prior to the American Revolution. These items are on loan from a private collection.
Saturday, October 3, 12:30 p.m.
Curator of Costumes Elizabeth Laba will lead a tour/talk through the gallery , exploring the nearly 40 historic bridal gowns.
