Musical Machines and Living Dolls: The Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata $19.95
The Morris Museum is pleased to announce the publication of a fully illustrated catalog for its permanent exhibition, Musical Machines and Living Dolls: The Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of Mechanical Musical Instruments and Automata. The 144 page catalog, which features 138 photographic images (119 full color) and over 20 illustrations, was written by Ellen M. Snyder-Grenier, former curator of the Guinness Collection, and includes an essay by Arthur W.J.G. Ord-Hume, director & senior archivist, Library of Mechanical Music and Horology, Guildford, Surrey, England.
A technical, 512 page hardbound reference work which includes contributions from some of the top contemporary kinetic artists from around the world specializing in the design & fabrication of puppets, marionettes, ventriloquist figures, light-wire puppets, hand-driven, coin-operated and clockwork driven automata. For those looking toward the historical foundations, the author includes an entire chapter dedicated to the golden age of automata, an in-depth exploration of the inner workings of a half dozen extraordinary examples from the 18th and 19th century. If you are curious about the study of simple-to-complex animation mechanisms or even inclined to try your hand at creating or repairing magical, moving, animated figures, this should be an invaluable, even inspirational – ‘tour de force’.
