"Le Buffet Magique" (The Magic Cupboard) Besides drawing on such subjects as opera, the circus, and the "exotic," Parisian automata makers often looked to everyday scenes-like this-as their topics. As this scene unfolds, a young boy's grandmother scolds him for stealing into the kitchen cupboard for a taste of her gooseberry jelly. In response, he sticks out his tongue at her! As part of the action, a fly scoots up the door and a mouse crawls over the apple. The piece also contains a cylinder musical movement, which provides the music.
