This presentation contrasts the mainstream Hollywood image of suburbia – a privileged environment for upper-middle and upper-class Americans – with those few films focusing on blue collar families, white ethnic groups, Asians, Hispanics and African-Americans. In addition, the discussion examines why filmmakers’ favorite suburban “outsiders” are creators such as E.T. In conjunction with the exhibition, Black Cinema: The Vintage Years, on view through November 23, 2008, this program is offered through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
