Gemstones at the Morris Museum
The Morris Museum Mineralogical Society (MMMS) was founded in 1971 to "promote interest and education in the various earth sciences and, in particular, the subjects of geology, mineralogy, paleontology, lapidary and related subjects.”

The MMMS meets at the Morris Museum at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month, except in July and August. Most meetings, which are open to the public, feature a speaker who delivers an illustrated lecture.

The society also hosts Rock and Mineral Weekend on Thanksgiving weekend every year at the museum and, for the past eight years, has hosted a gem, mineral and fossil sale in August on the grounds of Delbarton School in Morristown, for the benefit of the society treasury.

Annual MMMS Event at the Morris Museum:

Rock and Mineral Weekend

Saturday, November 28, 2009, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Sunday, November 29, 2009, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Organized by the Morris Museum Mineralogical Society, this popular, annual weekend event is free to the public with admission to the museum. Science enthusiasts of all ages will have the opportunity to examine fossils, minerals and fluorescent rocks. Guest speakers, mineral and fossil displays; workshops and games add to the weekend tradition.

Weekend highlights:

Visitors may start or add to their own rock collections with purchases from commercial vendors. Items for sale hail from all parts of the world and include fine, collectible specimens as well as purely ornamental pieces. Those attending are encouraged to bring their own rock, fossil and mineral specimens for traditional and computerized identification. In addition, exhibitors share their own private collections of world-class fluorescent minerals. Children join the fun by participating in a sandbox scavenger hunt.
