Rediscover Brooklyn

Join us for a special day visiting the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Outlet) section of Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.    

    

We will tour the museum independently with the option to see the newly opened Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, The Magic in Ancient Egypt exhibit, the American Identities: A New Look exhibit, and much more. 

We will enjoy lunch at the landmark restaurant Pete’s Downtown and have time to photograph the Manhattan skyline, as well as visit neighboring shops including the Jacque Torres Chocolate Shop.

A SPECIAL DAY IN NEWARK, NJ        

Thursday, March 27, 2008           

We will begin our day with a visit to the famous Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Enjoy a guided tour of this magnificent landmark building while examining the exterior and interior architecture, the splendid altar carvings, the pulpits and the organ. Next, we will enjoy a relaxing lunch at The Priory Restaurant on Market Street (a full hot/cold buffet). Last stop is the Newark Museum where we have a docent tour of the new exhibit Small, but Sublime, featuring oils from the renowned Hudson River School and the Tonalist movement. The show focuses on varied approaches to the art of landscape as a vehicle of national identity and the portrayal of our American land. There will be additional time to visit any of the other permanent collections (Asian, African, Classical, American or The Ballantine House) on your own.

LUNCHEON AT OSCAR’S AT THE WALDORF-ASTORIA &

LITERARY GREENWICH VILLAGE WALKING TOUR

Enjoy a buffet luncheon at Oscar’s, a neighborhood gathering place and stylish brasserie with all the amenities of one of New York’s landmark hotels, The Waldorf-Astoria.

We’ll enjoy a walking tour with Anthony Grifa of I’ll Take Manhattan Tours, which ambles past the homes of many literary giants and several off-the-beaten-path sites. We’ll stroll past the former homes of Mark Twain, Sinclair Lewis, Edgar Allen Poe, Eugene O’Neill, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Emma Lazarus. We’ll also explore sites associated with Herman Melville, Pearl Buck, Ann Morrow Lindbergh, Ida Tarbell and Eleanor Roosevelt. The tour will even bring us to a former speak easy which was the hangout for writers such as Upton Sinclair, Lillian Hellman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Arthur Miller and Edna Ferber before they achieved fame. A visit to Grove Court, the Salmagundi Club and the Pen & Brush Club are also included.

This trip is limited to 35 people.

Olana, Studio and Home of Artist Frederic Church,

Culinary Institute of America & St. Andrews Room

Visit the Persian style fantasy home designed and built by Frederic Church, one of the most important artistic residences in the United States. Trained by Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School of landscape painters, Church (1826-1900) was probably the most renowned American artist at the time of the Civil War. Bring your camera because breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains can be seen from the studio.

The afternoon will wrap up with a special lunch served in the world famous St. Andrews room of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).  Any dietary restrictions must be noted prior to the departure date, and an attempt will be made to accommodate.

ADVENTURES IN PHILADELPHIA

Join us as we relax on a cruise down the beautiful Delaware River, aboard the Spirit of Philadelphia. We will board this luxurious, modern ship at Penn’s Landing for a two-hour cruise with a narrated riverfront tour and spectacular views of the historic city. As we dine on a sumptuous three course hot/cold buffet prepared on board by culinary masters, we will be entertained by a live song and dance revue that will set your feet tapping!

Upon arrival back at Penn’s Landing, we will embark on a guided 45-minute trolley ride land to explore some of the nearby famous areas and buildings in the historic district. The ship is handicap accessible, as we have reserved the 2nd deck. Please notify us if you will need special assistance onto the trolley.

NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDENS & LUNCH AT MARIO'S

Join us for a trip to the New York Botanical Gardens, where we will begin with time on your own to visit the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a Victorian style glass house that is a New York City Landmark. View the beautiful tropical rain forest and the changing landscapes of flowers and foliage.

Later, enjoy a guided tram tour with a stop at the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, which features more than 3,000 plants from exquisite antique roses to modern hybrid teas, floribundas and shrub roses. There will be time for the "Shop in the Garden” that House and Garden Magazine calls “the ultimate in instant garden gratification.” After our garden visit, a fresh, robust Neapolitan lunch will be served at Mario’s, located in New York’s other “Little Italy” on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.  A choice of entrée will be given (Chicken Francese, Filet of Sole with Scampi Sauce or Veal Parmegiana)

PHILIP JOHNSON’S GLASS HOUSE &

LUNCHEON AT THE ROGER SHERMAN INN

Enjoy a 90-minute guided tour of Philip Johnson’s 1949 Glass House overlooking the architect’s beautiful 47-acre estate in New Canaan, CT. The one-half mile walking tour includes access to the Glass House, Brick House, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery and Da Monsta. There will be time to visit the Glass House Visitor’s Center and Gift Shop and stroll in the village of New Canaan. Comfortable walking shoes are suggested.

Our luncheon will be at the lovely Roger Sherman Inn, located inside a historic Victorian mansion. Sherman, a lawyer and delegate from Connecticut to the Continental Congress, had the distinction of being the only person to sign all four of these historical American documents: The Association, The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation and The Constitution of the United States. Guests will enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne, house wine, beer or Shirley Temple to be served with our entrée.
