This exhibition of hands-on puzzles is designed to challenge visitors' problem solving skills and provide plenty of fun. Brain Teasers 2 is produced and toured by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Presentation at the Morris Museum is made possible by a grant from the Gorham Foundation.

 

On the Road:  100 Years of Motorcycles in America

Sept. 22 through Dec. 4, 2011

MAIN GALLERY

This exhibition offers an exhilarating look at the motorcycle - its origins, engineering innovations, customization, and, of course, bike culture. From a 1901 Thomas Auto-Bi to motorcycles owned by celebrities such as Malcolm Forbes to contemporary custom choppers, On the Road examines important milestones of motorcycle history.

 

 

 

On the Head and In the Hand:

200 Years of Hats and Purses from the Morris Museum Collection

Calling all fashion lovers! The Morris Museum is unveiling its rich costume collection to present an exhibition of 87 hats and 52 purses representative of style eras from the 1770’s to the 1970’s.

Visual Thoughts: The Art Quilts of Fiber Revolution

June 23 - October 16, 2011

This exhibition presents 19 works by nineteen textile artists who use fiber as their medium: dyeing, painting, cutting, tearing, stamping, fusing and embellishing it. This exhibition was curated by Fiber Revolution member Kevan Rupp Lunney.

Antonio Petruccelli: An Unsung American Illustrator

Antonio Petruccelli (1907-1994) was one of America's finest 20th century illustrators. This exhibition includes covers and illustrations for Fortune, The New Yorker, Life and other magazines, as well as paintings and textile designs.

American Portraits - Harlem Heroes

Frank H. Netter, MD, Michelangelo of Medicine

Featuring more than 40 works of art by the acclaimed master of medical illustrations, this exhibition celebrates Dr. Frank Netter's contribution to the study of human anatomy. The exhibition will explore the following themes: the five senses, the human heart, and illustrations of the "patient as person".

Co-presented by the Morris Museum and Elsevier Global Medicine Group. Netter works on loan from the Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation collection.

The Legacy of Currier & Ives: Shaping the American Spirit

The Great Bartholdi Statue, 1885

Often found on calendars, cookie tins and Christmas cards, Currier & Ives images strike a nostalgic chord in many people. The exhibition featured sixty-four of the firm's hand-colored lithographs from the collection of the Michele & Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachussetts. The exhibition explored the artistry behind the prints as well as the important role they played in forging an American self-image. The Legacy of Currier & Ives: Shaping the American Spirit was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Creative Genius. The exhibition was organized by the Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachussetts.

Icons of Costume: Hollywood's Golden Era and Beyond

October 3 - December 5, 2010

Film lovers and 'fashionistas' will delight in seeing this exhibition, featuring fashions and accessories worn by luminous film stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Errol Flynn, Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, Warren Beatty, Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Kelly, Loretta Young, Arnold Schwarzenegger and many others.

More than 50 costumes and objects present the still-influential designs of celebrated fashion designers, from the 1940s through the 1990s, including Edith Head, Adrian, Walter Plunkett, Orry-Kelly, Bob Mackie and others of legendary renown. The exhibition highlights several films that were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume, of which five took home the Oscar. Also included are rare publicity stills, jewelry, and film props. This exhibition was organized by the James A. Michener Art Museum in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

One More Night At Elving’s Metropolitan Yiddish Theatre

Sept. 12 - Nov. 7, 2010

This exhibition celebrates Elving’s Metropolitan - Newark’s and New Jersey’s only commercially successful Yiddish theater, which was a neighborhood favorite, attended by everyone from school children to the legendary gangster Longy Zwillman. The 30 panels highlight stars of the Yiddish stage.

Slip into your finest and step into the Morris Museum’s galleries to experience a major shoe exhibition featuring more than 250 pairs of shoes.  The Shoe Must Go On! explores centuries of shoe design, and presents shoes from many different “walks” of life.The exhibition explores more than fifteen themes and features footwear of distinguished individuals who share a special connection to the state of New Jersey, including Governor Chris Christie and Thomas Edison, among others.

Valeri Larko: Two Decades

Valeri Larko has spent more than twenty years painting urban and industrial landscapes on location primarily in New Jersey and New York. This mid-career survey features a broad range of works from the earliest, painted on-site in Jersey City, up to the present, painted in the outer boroughs of New York City.

Shadow and Memory: Ellis Island's Unrestored Buildings

June 24 - August 1, 2010

Featuring the work of photographer Christopher Barnes, with photographs from the 1980’s when the hospital buildings stood empty, abandoned and deteriorated; historic photos; and Mr. Barnes' recent work documenting the process to stabilize them, undertaken by Save Ellis Island, Inc., the National Park Service partner for the adaptive reuse for these structures.  Once the largest US Public Health Service hospital in the country, constructed to treat ill and infirm immigrants, the buildings are slated to become the Ellis Island Institute and Conference Center..
