The evolution of clothing in the West – especially feminine undergarments – exposes remarkable changes in conceptions of beauty, modesty, respectability, hygiene and societal attitudes. Using information from works of art, advertisements, cartoons, literary sources, and surviving garments, this slide presentation examines past style and present trends to illuminate the power of fashion. This presentation is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Echoes of the Past: Styles in Women’s Costume and offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
